When former Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero was spotted training with Cape Town City recently, eyebrows were raised across the South African football fraternity.

At 35, and with a glittering overseas career behind him, the expectation was that Serero, who joined the Citizens in February on a short-term deal, would follow Kamohelo Mokotjo out the Hartleyvale door once the Betway Premiership season wrapped. Reports in local media even suggested that his time in Cape Town was already up.
But according to Siya sources, Serero made a different call.
Insiders have revealed to the crew that the ex-Ajax Cape Town star has decided to see out the remainder of his contract and fight for the team’s top flight survival in the Premiership relegation/promotion playoffs.
It’s a decision that has surprised many, not because of his ability, which remains undeniable, but because of the sacrifice involved. Serero could have chosen to sit out the high-pressure clashes against Casric Stars and Orbit College, but instead, he has elected to stand alongside the Western Cape side in their battle to avoid the drop.
Since returning to South African football after a decade abroad in the Netherlands and UAE, Serero has featured seven times for City. And while results have been mixed, his leadership, composure, and experience in the engine room have been invaluable in what has been a turbulent period for the club.
