Tinkler Takes A Swipe At Hugo Marques

Tinkler Takes A Swipe At Hugo Marques

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has commented on the club's former goalkeeper Hugo Marques, who surprisingly left the club at the beginning of the season.

Marques had featured in the first three matches of the 2022/23 campaign for the Citizens when he left the club in August, citing a pressing family issue that required his attention.

However, the Angolan international was unveiled by Petro de Luanda back home shortly after his exit from City.

In one season that he had been with the Mother City outfit, Marques contributed immensely to the team's impressive campaign, which saw them finish second on the log and qualify for the CAF Champions League with his 17 clean sheets in all competitions.

He won the 2021/22 PSL Goalkeeper of the Season award for his showing.

Speaking about the team's disappointing season due to inconsistent results, Tinkler highlighted injuries that hampered their progress, as well as Marques' 'injured brain', among other issues.

"We didn't achieve what our objectives were and that's just the reality. Our season didn't start well besides the fact that right at the beginning of the season we had quite a few injuries. Terrence Mashego injured, Taariq Fielies injured, Nathan (Fasika) stuck in the Congo, Thami Mkhize injured, Hugo Marques injured in the brain, I think, and that didn't start well. Three losses in a row, put a lot of pressure on us as the technical team and obviously also on the players," said Tinkler.

"But the players obviously responded well, especially in the second half of the season, as they did last season. But for me, it's a season wasted because we wanted to see a little bit of continuity from last season, which we didn't see. We wanted to see us raise our level, which we didn't do in the beginning of the season so that is obviously something we need to make sure for the following season doesn't happen again," the coach added.
