With CAF's five-year ranking system, the top ranked 12 nations on the continent get four spots (two in the Champions League and two in the Confederation Cup) while the remainder get two places each (one in each competition).
CAF calculates the top 12 teams by taking into account the nation's club team's success in each of the tournaments. It weights the points achieved according to the competitions and the years in which success was achieved.
In 2015, South Africa managed to finish 11th on the rankings. This was solely due to the points Pirates accumulated by finishing runners-up to Al Ahly in the Champions League in 2013.
For the 2016 edition it was a similar story with Pirates single-handedly clinching Mzansi's four spots with their 2013 exploits. However, this time around South Africa dropped to 12th as the amount of points earned by previous exploits decreases cumulatively by year. That means South African teams will have to perform in this year's competitions to ensure they finish in the top 12.
