HISTORY: Stellies Advance To First Confed Cup Semi-Final

Stellenbosch FC progressed to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history after defeating defending champions Zamalek 1-0 on Wednesday night.

CAF Confederation Cup

Result: Zamalek 0-1 Stellenbosch FC (0-1 aggregate)

Date: 09 April 2025

Venue: Cairo International Stadium

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker went with the same side that started the goalless draw in the first leg seven days ago in Cape Town, as Lesiba Nku and Ibraheem Jabaar kept their spots on the bench.

The South African side's form on the road has not been great in the competition, with the team's last away encounter ending in 5-0 drubbing at the hands of RS Berkane in Morocco.

The opening half was played at a similar pace to the first leg, with both sides feeling each other out although Zamalek enjoyed more of the possession this time around.

Zamalek had the best chance of the half after 30 minutes, as Ahmed Abou El Fotouh did well to pick out Seifeddine Jaziri in the box, but the attacker sent his header wide of the upright.

After a goalless first half, Barker responded with a double change at halftime to freshen up the attack, as Genino Palace and top scorer Devin Titus made way for Chumani Butsaka and Nku.

Nku nearly made the perfect impact for Stellenbosch six minutes into the second period after unleashing a powerful strike from distance, but Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad was equal to the effort.

Stellenbosch got their reward in the 79th minute as Nku turned provider to pick out Sihle Nduli, who fired past Awad from close range to put his side ahead on the night and on aggregate.

Stellenbosch will now face Fadlu Davids' Simba SC in the semi-finals.

Here's how they line up:

Zamalek: Awad, Gaver, Abdelmegeed, Shalaby, Emad, Elfetouh, Shehata, Said, Maher, Hamdy, Jaziri

Stellenbosch: Stephens, Kazie, Moloisane, Toure, Basadien, Palace, Khiba, Nduli, Titus, De Jong, Cupido
