Bafana Coach Has His Say On Blom's Chiefs Return

Bafana Coach Has His Say On Blom's Chiefs Return

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has given his opinion on Njabulo Blom's return to Kaizer Chiefs and appears to have left the door open for the player to don the national team jersey again under his tutelage.

Blom left Amakhosi at the end of 2022 for a move to Major League Soccer, joining St Louis City in early 2023 where he was coached by former Bafana Bafana defender Bradley Carnell, who has since left the club.

At the time, Blom he was part of Hugo Broos' pool of Bafana players as the coach was working on building a strong squad of players.

Blom, who did not immediately adapt to life on the pitch abroad, gradually transformed his game while he was in the US, showing his offensive game is just as strong as he the defensive side. His first season was a successful one in the US, featuring 30 times for the St Louis in his first campaign, then played 17 matches in the following campaign.

Amakhosi have secured the player on a loan deal until June 2025, with an option to purchase the player.

He last played for Bafana about a year ago but the door has been open for a return, should he rediscover the form that initially caught the eye of Broos.

"I hope that Njabulo will come back on the level that he was when he left South Africa. I've said it many times, it's good to go abroad, but you have to play. In the beginning, he played, then not and then he played again. We called him, I think, more than a year ago. After that, he did not play again. Let's hope with the transfer to Chiefs that he will play and that he will play good. Players who are playing good are always a candidate for Bafana Bafana," Broos said to media at Orlando Stadium on Thursday, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Uganda at the same venue on Friday evening.
