Bafana Face A Challenging Journey For Afcon Qualification

Bafana Face A Challenging Journey For Afcon Qualification

Details of Bafana Bafana's travel arrangements to Sfax in Tunisia, where they will face Libya in their final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier later this month, suggest it could very well be a logistical nightmare.

Team manager Barney Kujane told the press earlier this week that the national team would assemble on Saturday to make their great trek to the north of the continent via Frankfurt in Germany.

As he explained it, Bafana could spend more or less 24-hours on the road in order to reach their final destination for the March 24 qualifier at the Stade Taieb Mhiri.

The option to charter a flight directly to Sfax proved too costly for the South African Football Association, leaving Kujane to try and mastermind how to depart OR Tambo International this Saturday to Frankfurt, then Tunis and again have to travel by bus for about 300 km or endure a short flight to Sfax.

These plans, especially once Bafana are in Tunis, could change in the coming days. It is understood coach Baxter could settle for spending a day or so in the capital city, get at least two training sessions, and then make the trip to where the match against Libya will be played.

Kujane, who has to factor in seven European-based players – some of who have matches to play on Sunday, said they would join their teammates in Frankfurt. The team manager also has to make arrangements for two Orlando Pirates and five Mamelodi Sundowns players who are involved in CAF Champions League games on the weekend. Pirates will be in Conakry, Guinea and Sundowns will be in Morocco, where Kujane said the group would meet and fly together to Tunis, and then Sfax.
