The north London outfit carried a healthy lead into the clash at the Emirates Stadium, having defeated Milan 2-0 at the San Siro last week.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Gunners were dealt ablow when captain Laurent Koscielny was forced off with an injury and replaced by Callum Chambers.

Chances were hard to come by in the early stages but Danny Welbeck went close to breaking the deadlock on 25 minutes when the Gunners striker forced Gianluigi Donnaruma into a fine at his near post.

It was Milan who took the lead against the run of play on 35 minutes when Hakan Calhanoglu beat David Ospina with a swerving strike from 25-yards out.

Five miutes later, the hosts were awarded a penalty after the referee adjudged Ricardo Rodriguez to have brought down Danny Welbeck, who stepped up to convert from the spot, 1-1.

Both sides signalled their attacking intent early on in the second period as Henrick Mkhitaryan forced Donnarumma into a save before Suso curled an effort just wide at the other end moments later.

In an attempt to restore their lead, Milan introduced Nikola Kalinic in the 67th minute and he nearly scored with his first touch but his header was saved by David Ospina.

The Gunners took the lead on the night in the 72nd minute when Donnarumma failed to hold onto a routine strike from Granit Xhaka, 2-1.

Milan coach Genaro Gatusso responded by introducing Manuel Locatelli for the final 10 minutes of the half.

However, Welbeck sealed the win for the home side with five minutes remaining with a tap-in header at the far post after Donnarumma had saved Ramsey's initial header.

In the end, 3-1 was how the clash ended on the night, with the Gunners winning the tie 5-1 on aggregate.
