The Three Lions needed only 13 minutes to take the lead. The visitors were awarded a controversial penalty for a handball in the area and Rooney stepped up to slot the spot-kick, equalling Sir Bobby Charlton's international goalscoring record in the process. A mistake in the San Marino back four saw the travelers extend their lead in the 30th minute. A cross from Luke Shaw was inadvertently headed into the hosts' own goal by Cristian Brolli. With Rooney busy equalling records, Ross Barkley opened his account adding England's third to net his first international goal for his country. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain crossed from the right and Rooney was on hand to flick it on for the Evertonian to finish. England's fourth arrived in the 68th minute as Theo Walcott joined the party. Fabian Delph sent a low cross in from the left and Walcott hit it first time to make it 4-0. The goals kept coming thick and fast as Harry Kane scored the visitors' fifth in the 77th minute. Jonjo Shelvey picked out the perfect pass for Kane who took a touch before lifting the ball over the advancing keeper. The thumping was capped off with a sixth strike in the 78th minute when Walcott added his second after a clever pass from Barkley.
