Bayern Munich have confirmed that Spain international, Thiago Alcantara, will miss the World Cup in Brazil.
The 23-year-old had just returned from his knee injury and was expected to make his comeback for Bayern Munich in Saturday's German DFB Cup final against Borussia Dortmund.
However, his club has now confirmed that Alcantara will undergo a knee surgery after rupturing his knee ligament on Monday.
"This is a bitter blow for Thiago and we feel really sorry for him," Bayern CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, announced today as quoted by Kicker.
"He's a young guy who has been working hard to be fit for the World Cup in the country where he was born and now all of a sudden that dream is over.
"We will look after him in the next few weeks and do everything within our power to make sure he is ready for the start of the new season."
Thiago is the son of the Brazilian 1994 World Cup winner Mazinho, but was born in Italy. He joined Barcelona aged 14 and decided to represent Spain on international level.
After winning four La Liga titles with Barcelona, he joined Bayern Munich at the beginning of the season and was named in Vicente del Bosque's provisional World Cup squad.
