Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has explained why he did not celebrate after saving the penalty from Bukayo Saka that won the 2020 UEFA European Championship.
The Azzurri secured their second major European title after defeating England 3-2 on penalties, with the final having ended 1-1 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium.
Donnarumma saved penalties from Jadon Sancho and Saka, but the former AC Milan shot-stopper was surprisingly mute before he was mobbed by his teammates after the final spot-kick.
"I was already down after Jorginho's missed penalty and I thought we had lost, but instead I had to continue.
"Now, with VAR, they always look at your feet because you can't be in front of the line, so I turned to the referee to see if everything was okay.
"Then I saw my teammates coming towards me and everything started from there. I didn't understand anything!"
Donnarumma was named the Player of the Tournament, and was also included in the Team of the Tournament along with four of his Azzurri teammates.
With the showpiece now concluded, the 22-year-old is expected to complete a move to Paris Saint-Germain after parting ways with Milan as a free agent at the end of last month.
