Los Blancos and adidas launched the new away kit on the same day the home shirt for the 2016/17 season was unveiled – and coincidentally also on the same day Barca launched their own new purple away kit.
"The 2016/17 away kit reflects on the club's successful past and the values that have made it one of the world's biggest clubs," an official press release read.
"The purple colour is a tribute to the years of the Quinta del Buitre – the name given to the core of the Madrid team, which dominated Spanish football in the 1980s."
Real last had a purple shirt in the 2010/11 season, while last campaign's away shirt was grey and the 2014/15 away kit was pink.
