UEFA Nations League Report: Spain v Croatia 11 September 2018

UEFA Nations League

Result: Spain 6-0 Croatia

Date: 11 September 2018

Venue: Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero

Real Madrid star Marco Asensio bagged a goal and three assists as Spain humiliated World Cup finalists Croatia 6-0 in a UEFA Nations League clash on Tuesday evening.

Luis Enrique's charges got their campaign underway over the weekend with a 2-1 win over England at Wembley Stadium.

La Roja got off to a slow start in the opening exchanges of the match, while Croatia seemed to have settled the better of the two teams as they surged forward with ease.

The 2018 World Cup runners-up continued to pile the pressure on Spain inside the first quarter of an hour, but were yet to get clear goal scoring opportunities.

However, Luis Enrique's charges drew first blood in the 24th minute through Saul Niguez, who headed home a cross from Dani Carvajal.

Marco Asensio doubled the lead for the hosts in the 33rd minute with a 25-yard rocket that screamed into the top corner after some sloppiness at the back from Croatia, 2-0.

Spain were in dreamland two minutes later as Asensio cheekily lofted a shot from 20 yards that ricocheted off the crossbar, before deflecting in off goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic for the third goal.

La Roja were surely out of sight four minutes after the break as Rodrigo made it 4-0 with a strike from the right side of the box into the bottom corner following a through ball from Asensio.

Three minutes before the hour mark, Sergio Ramos made it 5-0 for Spain with a simple header inside the box, following a well-weighted corner from Asensio.

Isco made it 6-0 for La Roja 20 minutes before time, blasting a low shot past Kalinic following another assist from Asensio who delivered a square pass.

That proved to be the final piece of goal-mouth action as Spain claimed a second straight Nations League win.

La Roja now top Group four in League A with six points, followed by England and Croatia respectively.
