UEFA Nations League Report: Poland v Portugal 11 October 2018

UEFA Nations League

Result: Poland 2-3 Portugal

Date: 11 October 2018

Venue: Stadion Slaski

Portugal, who were without Cristiano Ronaldo, maintained their winning start to the UEFA Nations League with a 3-2 victory over Poland on Thursday.

The visitors came into the match looking to maintain their winning start after they defeated Italy 1-0 in their opening group encounter.

However, it was Poland who got off to the better start, with Krzystof Piatek giving the hosts the lead with a close-range header in the 18th minute.

Selecao did not have to wait too long for the equaliser as Pizzi picked out the in-form Andre Silva, who slotted home from close range in the 31st minute.

The visitors took control from then on and they managed to pull ahead just before the halftime break after Poland defender Kamil Glik deflected the ball into his own net.

Seven minutes into the second half, Portugal grabbed a third goal through Bernado Silva, who rifled home a shot from outside of the box that sailed into the bottom corner.

The hosts responded with a change after the hour-mark, with Mateusz Kich making way for former Borussia Dortmund star Jakub Blaszczykowski.

The change paid off for Poland as Blaszczykowski got on the end of Kamil Grosicki's cross and sent a fine volley past Rui Patricio from the edge of the box on 77 minutes.

Renato Sanches, who was a second-half substitute, had a couple chances to restore Portugal's two-goal advantage, but he had an effort cleared off the line, while his second attempt was tipped over by Lukasz Fabianski.

In the end, Selecao managed to hold on and see off a late push from Poland to secure three points and top spot in the group, five points ahead of Poland and Italy, who both have one point to their name.

Other results:   League C   Israel 2-1 Scotland Lithuania 1-2 Romania Montenegro 0-2 Serbia   League D   Faroe Islands 0-3 Azerbajin Kosovo 3-1 Malta
