UEFA Nations League

Result: Netherlands 3-0 Germany

Date: 13 October 2018

Venue: Johan Cruijff Arena

Germany's winless run in the UEFA Nations League continued after they suffered a 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday evening.

The former World champions were in search of their first win of the group after drawing 0-0 with France in their opening clash in Munich, while the Dutch lost 2-1 to Les Blues in their opener.

The clash got off to a slow start, with the game's first chance arriving after 19 minutes when Thomas Muller failed to fire past Japser Cillessen from point-blank range.

It was the hosts who broke the deadlock on 30 minutes as Virgil Van Dijk broke the deadlock with a close-range finish after Ryan Babel's header crashed off the underside of the bar.

Germany were inches away from leveling matters in the 38th minute when a quick counter attack ended with Muller firing agonisingly wide at the near post.

The Dutch managed to see out the remaining stages of the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Germany struggled to carve out chances upon resumption in the second half, prompting Joachim Low to introduce Leroy Sane and Julian Draxler after 57 minutes.

The visitors should have leveled matters in the 65th minute when Joshua Kimmich picked out Sane, who was left one-on-one with Cillessen but the winger failed to convert.

With the Germans pushing for an equaliser, gaps were open for the hosts to exploit on the counter in the closing stages.

Germany were made to pay for the leaving the gaps, as Quincy Promes led the counter attack and picked out Memphis Depay, who calmly slotted into the top corner, giving Manuel Neuer no chance, 2-0.

The Dutch rounded off the scoring in the third minute of time added on, with Georginio Wijnaldum getting on the score-sheet with a clinical strike into the bottom corner to round off an impressive win.
