UEFA Nations League Report: Netherlands v England 06 June 2019

UEFA Nations League

Result: Netherlands 3-1 England

Date: 06 June 2019

Venue: Estádio Dom Afonso Henriques

The Netherlands will face Portugal in the UEFA Nations League final after overcoming England 3-1 in extra time of their semi-final on Thursday evening.   The Netherlands had the first chance of the game in the eighth minute. Harry Maguire gave the ball away in a dangerous position to Steven Bergwijn, who made space for himself in the box with a neat turn but his left-footed effort was tame and straight at England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.   In the 20th minute, Memphis Depay cut inside from the inside-left position and worked himself a yard in the box but his shot was weak and easy for Pickford to deal with.   Oranje were slightly dominating possession and making it difficult for England to get out of their half with a high press. But it was the Three Lions who took the lead against the run of play.   On the half hour mark, Matthijs de Ligt made an uncharacteristic error in his own box with a poor touch, which allowed Marcus Rashford to pounce with De Ligt tripping him up in trying to retrieve the ball and giving away the penalty. Rashford dusted himself off and stroked the ball in to the bottom left-hand corner to break the deadlock.   In the 42nd minute, Ross Barkley chipped the ball forwards and Maguire headed the ball back to Fabian Delph on the edge of the box, but the Manchester City star's volley was tepid and straight at Netherlands goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.   The last action of the first half saw De Ligt get a free header in the box from a Depay corner, but he failed to make amends for his error and skewed the effort narrowly wide.   Harry Kane was brought on at halftime to replace Rashford, who wasn't able to shake off an injury sustained from a Denzel Dumfries tackle in the first half.   Gareth Southgate's side started more positively in the second half, playing with more attacking intent. Seven minutes after the interval, Delph's delivery found an unmarked Jadon Sancho in the box, but his header was brilliantly saved by Cillessen diving to his right.   Soon after, Kyle Walker dallied on the ball and was dispossessed by Marten de Roon, who forced Pickford in to a smart save with a stinging effort.   With 20 minutes to go, Ben Chilwell swung in a delicious free-kick from the left-hand side, but John Stones could not guide his header on target despite being unmarked.   De Ligt did indeed make up for his earlier error by scoring Oranje's equaliser when he got goal-side of John Stones and headed home superbly from a Depay corner in the 73rd minute.   Shortly afterwards, Quincy Promes had his shot blocked and it fell kindly for fellow replacement Donny Van de Beek on the edge of the six-yard box, but he could only send it over the top on the stretch.   It was a dramatic final ten minutes of regular time, with England having a goal disallowed and the Netherlands having a penalty shout turned down after VAR consultation.   The Netherlands took the lead in the 97th minute. Stones dallied in possession and was robbed by Depay in the box, whose low strike was saved at full-stretch by Pickford, but Walker kicked the ball against his other foot under pressure from Promes and it looped over Pickford and in.   Two minutes later, Frenkie de Jong dived to head what looked certain to be a third goal for the Netherlands, but Pickford kept it out with a superb reaction save.   Oranje wrapped it up in the 114th minute when Barkley sloppily gave possession away in his own box to Depay, who squared the ball to Promes for a simple tap-in.
