UEFA Nations League
Result: Italy 0-0 Portugal
Date: 17 November 2018
Venue: Stadio Giuseppe Meazza
Portugal advanced to the UEFA Nations League finals despite dropping points in a goalless draw against Italy on Saturday evening.
With Poland already relegated, Italy were the only who could overtake the European champions but only three points would suffice.
The Azzurri did see more of the ball in the opening stages of the encounter, however they were unable to carve out a clear-cut chances in the first 20 minutes.
Italy were presented with a glorious chance after 36 minutes when Ciro Immobile was sent one-on-one with Rui Patricio, but the Portuguese goalkeeper came out on op.
The hosts carved out another opening on the stroke of halftime break as Lorenzo Insinge picked out Immobile in the box, but the striker's header lacked the power to trouble Patricio.
It was no different at the opening stages of the second half, as Roberto Mancini's dominated possession without creating much going forward.
After a quiet spell in the half, Portugal managed to carve out their first big chance in the 75th minute when William Carvalho forced Gianluigi Donnaruma into a fine save from the edge of the box.
The Azzurri threw everything forward in search of a winning goal, with Giorgio Chiellini going close with a header in the 90th minute.
However, neither side could find a winning goal in the remaining stages as the spoils were shared on the night.
Portugal finish as group winners, while Italy end the campaign in second spot.
