Manchester City secured their first UEFA Super Cup title after defeating Sevilla via the penalty shoot-out on Wednesday night.

Result: Manchester City 1-1 Sevilla (City won 5-4 on penalties)

Date: 16 August 2023

Venue: Etihad Stadium

Pep Guardiola made four changes from the Citizens' win over Burnley last Friday, as Jack Grealish, Cole Palmer, Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol came into the starting line-ups.

City also came into the clash without star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, who is set to miss the next few months with an injury he picked up against Burnley.

The Premier League giants dominated in the opening exchanges but were unable to take advantage of their possession, as the likes of Nathan Ake and Jack Grealish squandered golden chances in the opening stages of the first stanza.

The Europa League winners found the breakthrough in the 25th minute when Youssef En-Nesyri rose above his above Nathan Ake and Gvardiol to head home a cross from Marcos Acuña.

City, meanwhile, lacked the usual creativity without De Bruyne on the pitch as Haaland often had to drop deep to get a touch of the ball as they went into the break trailing.

That all changed for the Champions League winners on the hour mark when Rodri sent a deep cross to the far post where Palmer was on hand to send a looping header over Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Sevilla responded with a double change for the final 15 minutes as Oliver Torres and Jesus Navas made way for Juanlu and Argentine World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel.

However, neither side could find a winning goal in the latter stages of the second half, sending the game to penalties where City held their nerve to triumph 5-4 after Nemanja Gudelj missed the final spot-kick for Sevilla.
