UEFA Champions League
Result: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Monaco
Date: 14 September 2016
Venue: Wembley Stadium
Monaco shocked Tottenham Hotspur in their first UEFA Champions League, Group E match after beating the English side 2-1 at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night.
The loss sees Spurs at the bottom of Group E with zero points while Monaco top the standings with three points.
The other Group E game saw Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow play to a 2-2 draw.
It was not the ideal start for the visiting side who saw Nabil Dirar leave the field injured after only five minutes and was replaced by Thomas Lemar.
Ten minutes later, though, Monaco took the lead courtesy of a spectacular long range effort from Bernardo Silva who found the corner of the net, 1-0.
On the half hour mark substitute Lemar was in the right place at the right time as he tapped home a rebounded shot, 2-0.
Tottenham tried to find their way back into the game after going two goals behind and gave themselves a fighting chance a minute before the break when Toby Alderweireld headed home a corner-kick from Erik Lamela, 2-1.
Three minutes into the second half Dele Alli almost found the equaliser for Tottenham, but his thunderous long range shot was superbly saved by the fingertips of the Monaco goalkeeper.
In the 55th minute Harry Kane made his way into the box, but his powerful shot was cleared off the line by a defender.
Spurs kept pushing forward and Kane came close to scoring again in the 80th minute when he got onto the end of a low cross into the box, but his shot was well-saved by the keeper.
Despite throwing virtually their whole side forward in attack in the dying minutes, Spurs could not find an equaliser.
