UEFA Champions League Report: Real Madrid v Manchester City 04 May 2022

Real Madrid advanced to the final of the UEFA Champions League after staging another impressive comeback to eliminate Manchester City.

UEFA Champions League

Result: Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester City (6-5 on aggregat)

Date: 04 May 2022

Venue: Santiago Bernabeu

Los Blancos made two changes from the 4-3 loss in the first-leg, as they recalled Nacho and Casemiro while the visitors were able to recall Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Kyle Walker.

Pep Guardiola's charges carved out the first real chance in the 20th minute after Bernardo Silva latched onto a through ball by Kevin De Bruyne in the box but his half-volley produced a sublime save from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Citizens kept Carlo Ancelotti's troops at bay by rotating the ball very well and waited for their moments as Phil Foden had a chance to break the deadlock just before the halftime break after a knockdown by Gabriel Jesus in the last third but his cracking strike was parried away by Courtois.

The sides went into the half-time break without goals, as City retained their 4-3 lead on aggregate and Madrid had to come to the party in the second stanza.

That's exactly what Los Blancos did, as Vinicius Junior had a big chance within a minute from the restart after a cross towards the back post by Dani Carvajal found him unmarked but he missed the target form six-yard out with only goalkeeper Ederson to beat.

Madrid made an attacking change 22 minutes before time as Rodrygo replaced Toni Kroos while a couple of minutes later Guardiola withdrew De Bruyne and brought on IIkay Gundogan for fresh legs in attacking midfield.

It was the Citizens eventually broke the deadlock just after that as Riyad Mahrez received a pass from Silva on the inside channel in the box and smashed a first-time strike into the top corner.

City went all out in the dying minutes and allowed Madrid back into the game as Ferland Mendy made a goal-line clearance before Rodrygo equalised on the night and got a goal back on aggregate with a first-time finish after a cross by Benzema.

However, Los Blancos sensationally got back into the tie in stoppage time, as Rodrygo made it 2-1 with a header in the box after a cross by Marco Asensio and forced the game into extra-time.

The Citizens shot themselves in the foot just three minutes into extra-time as they conceded a penalty after Ruben Dias brought down Karim Benzema, who took responsibility and slotted him his 15th goal of the campaign to put his side 6-5 up on aggregate.

City nearly equalised on the stroke of halftime in extra-time after Foden latched onto a cross by Cancelo at the back post but his strike was parried away by Courtois with his fingertips.

Guardiola's men could not find their rhythm in the second stanza in extra-time as Madrid ran down the clock with substitutions and held on to book a spot in the final against Liverpool later this month in Paris.
