Cristiano Ronaldo netted a brace as Real Madrid came from behind to defeat ten-man Bayern Munich 2-1 in their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg tie.
After a quiet start to the encounter, Los Blancos nearly broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when Toni Kroos picked out Karim Benzema, whose header crashed against the crossbar.
However, it was Bayern who broke the deadlock in the 25th minute as Arturo Vidal powered home a fine header, following a cross from Thiago Alcantara.
Carlo Ancelotti's charges had the chance to double the lead in the 41st minute but Vidal headed over the far post, before Manuel Neuer did well to deny Ronaldo two minutes later.
The hosts pushed for more goals and were awarded a penalty when Dani Carvajal was adjudged to have to handled in the box. Vidal stepped up but blazed his effort overt he crossbar.
The visitors leveled matters shortly after the break, as un-marked Cristiano Ronaldo volleyed home Carvajal's cross from 12-yards out.
Bayern were then reduced to 10 men after 60 minutes when Javi Martinez was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Manuel Neuer came to Bayern's rescue in the 72nd minute, as the German shot-stopper did well to deny Benzema from close range.
However, Real took the lead in the 76th minute as Marcos Asensio's teasing cross was turned home by Ronaldo in the six-yard box.
Ancelotti threw on French winger Kingsley Coman for the final 10 minutes as they pushed for an equaliser, but they struggled carve out an opening.
Real enjoyed most of the possession in the closing stages, but the score remained 2-1 at the full-time whistle.
