With security guidelines being less strict before the 1990s, some stadiums could pull massive crowds due to many fans being allowed to stand, while modern-day rules often request seated arenas, particularly in the Champions League.

The record for the biggest attendance in the UCL in its current format (since 1993) stems from the 1994/95 campaign, when FC Barcelona hosted Paris Saint-Germain in front of 115 500 fans at the Camp Nou. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with PSG advancing courtesy of a 2-1 win in the return leg.

However, even bigger attendance figures were recorded in the European Champions Cup – the predecessor of the Champions League.

The record attendance was registered in the 1969/70 semi-final between Celtic and Leeds United, with a massive 135 805 flocking into the Hampden Park, according to UEFA. The Scottish giants had won the first leg of so-called "Battle of Britain" 1-0, and also beat Leeds 2-1 in the second leg.

The second-biggest crowd was drawn by Real Madrid's quarter-final against Juventus in the 1961/62 campaign, talkSPORT pointed out. Los Blancos were knocked out of the European Cup for the first time in 1961 after winning the first five editions of the tournament. As a consequence, 130 000 supporters and football lovers made their way to the Santiago Bernabeu for the quarter-final against Juventus and saw the home side win 1-0.
