Ten Of The Greatest Comebacks In UEFA Champions League History

On Wednesday night, Benzema cemented his name in Champions League history with his heroics against the Parisians. The Frenchman, the competition's third-highest scorer in this season's edition, is now the oldest player ever to score three goals in a UCL game, sealing a vital victory for his team in the process.

The Spanish giants have also been on the wrong side of some comebacks in the Champions League, though.

During the 2018/19 campaign, going into their round of 16 second-leg tie against a youthful Ajax Amsterdam team with a 2-1 lead, the then-reigning champions were victims of a scintillating performance from the visitors.

Ajax scored three goals in the space of an hour. In the 70th minute, Marco Asensio sparked a brief revival for the home side but the game was put to bed two minutes later by the Dutch side courtesy of a magnificent free-kick from Lasse Schone.

That same season, the team from the Netherlands would also fumble a commanding lead, with the Johan Cruyff Arena being the setting for Lucas Moura's hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals as the English side won 3-2.

The Brazilian would end the game with a dramatic 95th-minute winner to seal the north Londoners' passage to their first-ever UCL final.

Spurs' opponents in that final had to overturn a semi-final deficit of their own. Liverpool had lost 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the first leg of their clash.

An early Divock Origi goal would calm the Reds' nerves in the return fixture against Barcelona, before half-time substitute Georginio Wijnaldum fired in two goals in two minutes to send Anfield wild.

With Liverpool in the ascendency, the Merseyside club would ride the momentum to complete the comeback, with Origi's second of the night sealing the 4-0 victory.

The Blaugrana, however, are responsible for arguably the greatest comeback in the competition's history.

Xavi Hints At Haaland Transfer Bid

The Catalan giants overcame a 4-0 drubbing they had received at the hands of PSG to win 6-5 on aggregate thanks to two Neymar goals and his 95th-minute assist to set up Sergi Roberto's winner in the second leg at the Camp Nou.
