During Liverpool's 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, Mohamed Salah managed to equal a record held by Didier Drogba.

Despite being on the end of a humiliating defeat at the hands of Los Blancos on Tuesday night, the encounter also proved historic for Salah as he went joint-top with his former Chelsea teammate Drogba as the African footballer with the most goals in Champions League history.
The 30-year-old doubled the Reds' lead early in the first half of their encounter with the Spanish champions following a mistake from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The Egypt international pounced on the Belgian's error before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner of the goal to give Jurgen Klopp's men a 2-0 lead.
That would be as good as it got for the Merseyside outfit, however, as Los Blancos would stage an emphatic comeback.
Salah's strike was his 44th in Europe's premier club competition, managing to accomplish that feat in 78 games, 14 matches fewer than his Ivorian counterpart.
Still scoring at a remarkable rate, with 19 goals in 34 matches in the 2022/23 campaign so far, it appears likely that Salah will usurp the two-time CAF African Footballer of the Year sooner rather than later.

With 42 of his Champions League goals having been scored for Liverpool, Salah's latest strike also saw him overtake Steven Gerrard as the club's highest scorer in Europe's elite club competition.
