Sadio Mane Breaks UEFA Champions League Record, Equals Another

Sadio Mane Breaks UEFA Champions League Record, Equals Another

During Liverpool's 3-2 win over Villarreal in their UEFA Champions League semi-final clash on Tuesday, Sadio Mane was able to find the back of the net and break a competition record while equalling another in the process.

It seemed the Reds were on the verge of an epic Champions League collapse in the second leg of their semi-final when the Yellow Submarine scored two first-half goals to level the contest on aggregate.

Jurgen Klopp's men, however, put the contest to bed in the second half when they scored three unanswered goals courtesy of Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Mane.

The Senegalese's strike, his fifth in this season's tournament, made him the most prolific African in the history of the competition's knockout phase with 15 goals, putting him ahead of previous record holder Didier Drogba.

Mane's 15 Champions League knockout-stage goals for Liverpool also means he now has the record for the most goals scored for an English team in the latter rounds of the tournament, tied with Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

The Merseysiders have now made it to their 10th European Cup/Champions League final, the most by an English team, with only Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Real Madrid having made it to more since the competition's inception.

The 2018/19 UCL winners now wait to see if they will face Real Madrid, who beat Liverpool in the 2017/18 Champions League final, or Premier League rivals Manchester City in the decider at the Stade de France in Paris on 28 May.
