After finding themselves 2-0 down at Old Trafford at half-time following a disappointing opening 45 minutes, United needed something special to turn the clash around in front of expecting fans.
Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men eight minutes after the break, before captain Harry Maguire equalised for the Red Devils in the 75th minute. Bruno Fernandes, meanwhile, picked up both assists.
United continued to pile pressure on a seemingly tired Atalanta, with that intensity eventually paying off in the 81st minute when Ronaldo found the back of the net with a well-timed header from a Luke Shaw cross into the box.
A feeling of relief and jubilance washed over the home crowd as Ronaldo sprinted to the corner flag before sliding on his knees in celebration, and perhaps not only because the goal put United ahead.
His late strike also saw him reclaim a Champions League goalscoring record, as he is now the man who has scored against the most opponents in the competition (39). Messi had drawn level with his rival after he was on target against RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.
This is according to Manchester Evening News, who also pointed out that the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward has netted 137 times in Europe's biggest club competition since his debut 19 seasons ago.

"We've got a habit of doing this at this club, but first half we played well but they never stopped believing and kept going."
