Karim Benzema Equals Cristiano Ronaldo Record

Karim Benzema Equals Cristiano Ronaldo Record

Karim Benzema scored the winner in Real Madrid's stunning comeback victory over Manchester City to book Los Blancos a spot in the UEFA Champions League final, and equalled one of Cristiano Ronaldo's records doing so.

When the game looked dead and buried following Riyad Mahrez's strike to make the aggregate score 5-3 and 1-0 on the night in City's favour, Carlo Ancelotti's men found inspiration in substitute Rodrygo.

The Brazilian scored twice in stoppage time to force the tie to extra-time, before 34-year-old Benzema won a penalty for his side just five minutes into the allotted 30 minutes and duly converted his effort from 12 yards to bring up his 15th goal in the competition this season.

In doing so, the Frenchman equalled a remarkable record as he became the only player in history after his ex-colleague Ronaldo to strike on 10 occasions in the knockout rounds of a single Champions League campaign.

Benzema has enjoyed a spectacular season across all competitions for the Spanish giants, having scored 43 goals in as many matches and assisted a further 14 strikes, with many believing he is the current frontrunner for the 2022 Ballon d'Or award.

Dybala 'Chooses' Next Club

France Football announced earlier this year that the criteria for the accolade had changed, with it now running in line with the regular European season and with individual performances being taken into account more than what a player wins collectively with his club or national team, among other factors.

Here are nine footballers who are already confirmed to be leaving their current clubs at the end of the campaign:
