In a bid to claim their first win over Bafana Bafana since 2019, Lesotho have officially enlisted the services of a South African coach.
The two Southern African nations will face each other once again this coming weekend as they continue to vie for qualification for the FIFA World Cup next year. The sides actually met during the previous international break at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, where Hugo Broos’ charges emerged as 2–0 victors. However, there was a major fallout from the match involving an ineligible player.
Teboho Mokoena took to the field during the match but was not supposed to play due to the accumulation of yellow cards. While the consequences of those actions are yet to be determined, both nations will reignite their rivalry on 5 February. This time, Dikwena have bolstered their technical team with a South African in an attempt to gain an edge over the current Group C leaders.
Upington City FC head coach Abram Mongoya will now be Lesotho’s second assistant, and the Lesotho Football Association (LFA) have released a statement confirming the news.
“The Lesotho Football Association has reinforced the Likuena technical team with the addition of former Bantu and current Upington City head coach Abram Mongoya to work alongside recently appointed assistant coach Bafokeng Mohapi and goalkeeper coach Sam Ketsekile,” the statement read.
“The shake-up comes following the departure of Bob Mafoso, who is now based in Namibia coaching African Stars, the league champions who will be playing in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League in September.
“Likuena will be returning to work in the coming week with a provisional squad of locally based players to commence preparations for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup qualifier against South Africa, scheduled for Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on 5 September, as well as the away game against Benin four days later.”
