Deadline day provided fireworks as the league witnessed the biggest transfer in its history. After a long-running saga, Alexander Isak finally got his wish and completed a record-breaking €144 million (R2.9 billion) move from Newcastle United to Liverpool.
The Swede had deliberately missed the entirety of Newcastle’s pre-season and the start of their league campaign to force through a switch to Anfield — and he now has his dream move.
To replace him, the Magpies splashed €85 million (R1.7 billion) on German striker Nick Woltemade. After a breakout season at Stuttgart, where he scored 17 goals and provided three assists, the towering forward arrives at St James’ Park tasked with filling the massive void left by Isak, one of last season’s most prolific scorers.
Despite interest from Bayern Munich and Chelsea, Woltemade opted for Tyneside to make his mark in the Premier League.
The window also underlined clubs’ hunger for goalscorers, with several sides breaking the bank to secure firepower. Manchester United followed suit, investing €76 million (R1.5 billion) in highly-rated Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig.
