Copa America: New Statement Released On Shock Stadium Brawl

Copa America: New Statement Released On Shock Stadium Brawl

A new statement on the fights between Uruguay players and Colombia fans has been released.

South America's football body has released a new statement following the mass brawl between players and fans at the 2024 Copa America semi-final stage.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Uruguay's 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the United States ended with violent clashes between some of their players and a section of their opponents' supporters.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was seen in the middle of the brawl at the Bank of America Stadium, with the incident occurring close to where the families of Uruguay's stars were seated.

It has been said Nunez and his teammates sought to protect their loved ones amid abuse from Colombia fans.

While CONMEBOL condemned the horrific scenes from Thursday, the organisation has since said it has launched an investigation into the matter.

"CONMEBOL has opened an investigation to understand the sequence of events and the responsibilities of those involved in the acts of violence that occurred at the end of the match," a statement from the organisation reads, according to ESPN

"We want to reaffirm and warn that no action will be tolerated that tarnishes this global football celebration.

"It is unacceptable that an incident like this turns passion into violence. Therefore, no behaviour that harms the sporting competition will be tolerated."

The final of the Copa America, meanwhile, will be played between 2021 champions Argentina and Colombia early on Monday.
