Serie A Report: Sassuolo v Juventus 15 July 2020

Result: Sassuolo 3-3 Juventus

Date: 15 July 2020

Venue: MAPEI Stadium

Juventus missed the chance to go nine points clear at the top of the Serie A table after a 3-3 draw at Sassuolo on Wednesday night.

Bianconeri manager Maurizio Sarri made four changes from the side that were held to a draw by second-placed Atalanta, as Alex Sandro, Giorgio Chiellini, Miralem Pjanic and Gonzalo Higuain were all recalled.

The visitors did not take long to settle in the game, as Danilo opened the scoring in just the fifth minute with a strike from the edge of the box after he was picked out by Pjanic from a set-piece.

The Old Lady were two goals ahead in the 12th minute after Pjanic chipped a well-weighted pass over the defence for Higuain, who went clear to calmly slot past goalkeeper Andrea Consigli.

Roberto De Zerbi's charges pulled a goal back just before the half-hour mark after Francesco Caputo held off two defenders played a ball inside the box to the on-rushing Filip Djuricic, who fired into the top corner.

Sassuolo were causing problems for Sarri's troops in the closing stages of the first stanza, Cristiano Ronaldo almost restored the two-goal cushion for Juventus in first-half stoppage time after pouncing on a pass inside the box although his snap-shot sailed inches over the bar.

The game was there for taking for either side early in the second stanza as the hosts levelled matters six minutes into the second stanza courtesy of a stunning free-kick from Domenico Berardi that found the top corner.

Sassuolo were in the lead three minutes later after Berardi delivered a good cross to the back post, where Caputo was on hand to tuck home from close range, with the Juventus defence caught napping.

However, Bianconeri equalised in the 64th minute after Sandro made a great leap at the near post to power home a corner from Rodrigo Bentancur.

Juventus were playing on a counter-attack in the last quarter of an hour and Ronaldo almost snatched the winner after he was teed up by Sandro inside the box but his powerful strike was kept out by Consigli with his leg.

Szczesny ensured the encounter ended all square after keeping out Mehdi Bourabia stinging effort in second-half stoppage time as the Old Lady now sit seven points clear of second-place Atalanta while Sassuolo remain in eighth place.
