Toronto Superstar ‘Terminates’ Deal, Mailula To Stay?

A Toronto FC superstar has reportedly terminated his contract with the club.

A player who Hugo Broos suggested was in the way of Cassius Mailula’s development at Toronto FC has reportedly terminated his contract with the North American club.

When the 23-year-old first signed for Canadian side, he and his representatives were blasted by the national team head coach for choosing to play for a club which already had established European internationals in their starting XI.

Mailula signed from Mamelodi Sundowns and was contending for starting spots against the likes of 2020 UEFA European Championships winners Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi.

“I’m afraid that Mailula has not a good agent," Hugo Broos claimed

"When you let him go to Toronto where you know they’re having two Italian internationals, [Lorenzo] Insigne is there, that there is a Canadian international, [Deandre] Kerr."

The young attacker subsequently struggled for playing time at the BMO Field and he stopped being selected by the Bafana Bafana squad as a consequence.

It forced the Ga Molepo native to make a loan move to Wydad Athletic Club this past campaign, but in seems only after a day after he confirmed that he would be returning to Major League Soccer, he could have a future at his current employers.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Insigne will be terminating his current contract with Toronto FC. Along with winning a continental championship with his native Italy in 2021, the 34-year-old enjoyed an illustrious career playing for Serie A giants Napoli for most of his career before making the transition to north America.

Now it seems that he will have to find a new club however, because the same report has claimed that while the contract was originally supposed to end in 2026, they have agreed to part ways now.

Whether his exit avails more opportunity for Mailula remains to be seen but he did end his time at Wydad on a good note, scoring in his final game for the club at the FIFA Club World Cup against Al Ain.
