Ancelotti Reacts To 'Surprise' Benzema Decision

Carlo Ancelotti did not seem too pleased when he reacted to Karim Benzema's decision to leave Real Madrid, which was announced by the Frenchman on the weekend.

It was confirmed early on Sunday that the 35-year-old would be playing his final game for the club later that same evening against Athletic Bilbao.

Benzema had been strongly linked with a lucrative offer in Saudi Arabia, believed to be from Al Ittihad, in the build-up to Real's final match of the season, but only announced his decision on Sunday.

Ancelotti appeared taken aback by the Frenchman's idea to leave, particularly after it seemed he would extend his deal in Madrid by another 12 months.

"Benzema told us about his decision to leave the club this (Sunday) morning, it was really unexpected," he said, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

"His departure was surprising, now we have time to think about what we should do. We will sign strikers.

"We want to sign a striker that can score goals and link up well so, a striker that plays football well."

The 2022 Ballon d'Or winner is expected to join Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League in the coming weeks, after scoring 353 goals and assisting a further 165 strikes in 647 appearances for Los Blancos.
