Former Galactico: Why Ronaldo Left Real
The Englishman, who recently joined DC United in the MLS, played alongside the Portugal international for six years during their time together at Old Trafford, and faced the Argentine star on a few occasions in the UEFA Champions League.
Speaking on an American radio show, Rooney was asked who he thought was the better player between them, and he, somewhat surprisingly, sided with the Blaugrana star.
"Messi," the 32-year-old answered, according to GiveMeSport.
"They are probably the best two players ever to play the game, and I just think Messi is, in my eyes, the greatest ever."
