During the mid-season transfer window, the iconic Brazilian made the shock move to return to his homeland to play for his boyhood club, Santos. This came after Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal decided to terminate his contract following yet another injury-plagued campaign.

It was rumoured that the intention behind his decision to return to the Peixe was to regain full fitness in the Brazilian top flight, signing a six-month deal before attempting to orchestrate a move back to European football — with Barcelona allegedly his preferred destination.

While life back in Sao Paulo started off brilliantly, with three goals and three assists in his first seven appearances in the Campeonato Paulista, the legendary attacker suffered two separate hamstring injuries in March and April and has been sidelined ever since — casting doubt on whether European clubs will be keen to land Neymar.

While clubs in Europe may be reluctant to sign Brazil’s all-time top goalscorer, Santos appear keen to retain the superstar’s services. According to TNT Sports Brazil, the Mogi das Cruzes native has decided to sign an extension with the club until the end of next season, in the hopes of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The same report also claims that he is not far from returning to action after dealing with his recurring thigh injury. It is understood he will likely be fit for their Copa Betano do Brasil clash against Clube de Regatas Brasil at the end of this month.
