With his match-winning strike against Olympique Lyon on Sunday night, Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi has now scored more non-penalty goals than Cristiano Ronaldo in his career.

The Argentine continued his fine start to the campaign with yet another goal for the French giants, this time in a 1-0 away win over rivals Lyon in Ligue 1.

Messi, 35, has now found the back of the net on six occasions across all competitions since the 2022/23 campaign got underway, while he has also contributed with eight assists.

However, the achievement on the footballing world's lips is that the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner has proved to be more lethal than long-time rival Ronaldo in the non-penalty goals department despite having played 150 fewer matches.

According to the Daily Mail, Messi has now scored 672 goals from open play in his professional career, with Manchester United's Ronaldo having done so 671 times since he burst on to the scene at Sporting Lisbon.

With his goal in PSG's victory at the weekend, Messi needs just two more league strikes to equal his tally from the 2021/22 season, in which he scored just six times in Ligue 1.
