The Argentine surprisingly took the No. 30 jersey when he joined the French giants from FC Barcelona on a free transfer in the most recent transfer window.
Messi had worn the number at Barcelona since 2008, but the Argentina forward wanted Neymar to keep the No. 10 jersey when he made the move to Paris.
"The No. 10 was his and I was arriving at a new team to help," Messi told France Football.
"It was incredible that he offered me it, but I expected that because I know Neymar well. We spent time together at Barcelona and we're friends.
"But, I thought it was right that he kept the No. 10. So, I picked a different number that I liked."
The Argentine has not yet fully hit the heights in the French capital this season, having registered just four goals in 13 appearances across all competitions for Les Parisiens.
