European Golden Shoe Race: Cristiano Ronaldo Closes In On Leader

Cristiano Ronaldo has taken another big step towards what could be his first European Golden Shoe in five years, while Lionel Messi could drop out of the top 10.

The 35-year-old is experiencing a superb campaign in Italy and has now been involved in a goal in his past 18 successive appearances.

Ronaldo scored a brace after converting two crucial penalties to help his side come from behind twice against Atalanta on Saturday to secure a 2-2 draw.

He has now netted seven times in six games since the restart of Serie A, and climbed to third place in the Golden Shoe race.

Overall, Ronaldo has now scored 28 times in league action this season, equating to 56 points in the Golden Shoe race.

Only Lazio's Ciro Immobile, with 29 goals, and Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, with 34 Bundesliga strikes, have netted more than the Portuguese this season.

Both Ronaldo and Immobile still have six games left to overtake Lewandowski, but the latter has only found the back of the net twice since the resumptions of Italian top-flight football.

Further down the ranking, Messi has stayed on 22 goals, and therefore has very little chance to defend his title. In fact, the Argentine could even drop out of the top 10 by the time the 2019/20 campaign ends.
