The Portuguese forward caused a stir last season when he directed provocative gestures at Atleti supporters during a game in which he scored a remarkable hat-trick.
Ronaldo was hoping for a similar performance at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday, but was unable to get on the scoresheet for his team.
He did go close in injury time with the score at 2-2, beating a few Atleti players on his way into the opposition box, but his strike went agonisingly wide.

Following his effort, Ronaldo was seen making a hand gesture towards a section of the home fans, and he explained after the match that it meant "learn, you have to learn", according to the Daily Mirror.
The former Real Madrid talisman was jeered from start to finish on Wednesday night, and perhaps wanted to remind Atletico fans just how close he came to deciding the game once again.
