Politician Steps In To 'Stop' Greenwood Transfer

Politician Steps In To 'Stop' Greenwood Transfer

Mason Greenwood's potential transfer from Manchester United to Olympique Marseille is reportedly under threat.

A politician has revealed he will attempt to stop Mason Greenwood's transfer to a French club after Manchester United reportedly accepted a bid for his services.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Red Devils and Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille had struck an agreement over the 22-year-old's transfer.

While the one-time England international still needs to decide whether or not he wants to join the French club, the latest news suggests that many in Marseille are against his arrival following his arrest on suspicion of attempted rape and assault in January 2022.

The charges, which included engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, he faced were eventually dropped early in 2023 after the Greater Manchester Police said key witnesses were no longer willing to testify.

After some Marseille supporters started an anti-Greenwood hashtag online calling for the French giants to scrap the idea of signing him, the city's mayor, Benoit Payan, has said he will hold talks with the club's president, Pablo Longoria, in an attempt to have the potential transfer scrapped.

"Greenwood's behaviour is unspeakable, unacceptable," he told RMC.

"Hitting his wife... I saw images that deeply shocked me. Massacring his wife in this way is unbecoming of a man, and he cannot have his place on this team.

"The values of OM and Marseille are anything but that in fact. It's a shame. I will ask [Marseille president] Pablo Longoria not to recruit Greenwood. I don't want my club to be covered with the shame of someone who hits his wife."

The moral issue surrounding Greenwood appears to have been influential in United's motivation to sell the striker, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in LALIGA.
