English Premier League Report: Manchester United v Burnley 22 January 2020

Result: Manchester United 0-2 Burnley

Date: 22 January 2020

Venue: Old Trafford

Manchester United's poor form in the Premier League continued after a 2-0 defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Phil Jones and Juan Mata earned re-calls to the starting line-up as Victor Lindelof misses out through injury and Luke Shaw dropped to the bench.

United controlled the game from the onset but should have gone ahead after 17 minutes when Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent a fine cross into Anthony Martial, who failed to steer his effort on target from 10-yards out.

The frustration began to grow for United and particularly Martial, who squandered another opening on 33 minutes as his poor first touch in the box allowed Charlie Taylor to make a vital block.

The hosts were made to rue those misses as Burnley broke the deadlock with their first effort on target as Ben Mee's knockdown found Chris Wood, who volleyed past David de Gea on 39 minutes.

Despite the introduction of Mason Greenwood at the start of the second half for the hosts, it was Burnley who got the next goal on 55 minutes through Jay Rodriguez's stunning strike from the edge of the box.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded with a double change on 70 minutes, with Brandon Williams and Daniel James making way for Shaw and Jesse Lingard.

The late flurry of changes made no difference to the home side's approach as Burnley were able to hold for three points and a clean sheet.

As a result, the Red Devils remain in fifth spot but are now six points behind the top four while Sean Dyche's men jumped to 13th position.

Leicester City 4-1 West Ham United

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Norwich City
