Lionel Messi played a starring role as LaLiga champions FC Barcelona embarrassed Huesca 8-2 at the Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

The Camp Nou was silenced after three minutes when Cucho Hernandez collected a knockdown from Samuele Longo before slotting past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

Barca hit back and levelled matters in the 16th minute as Messi surged into the box before firing into the bottom corner.

The turnaround was complete on 24 minutes as Huesca's Alan Pulido deflected Jordi Alba's cross into his own net, with the hosts taking control of the encounter.

The hosts pushed for more goals and they were rewarded in the 39th minute as Alba provided yet again, with Luis Suarez profiting from the full-back's cross.

There was still time for Huesca to pull another goal back before the break when Alejandro Gallar turned home Gomez's cross from close range.

Barca didn't have to wait long to get their fourth goal in the second half as Ousmane Dembele was afforded time and space before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

The fifth goal arrived five minutes later as Messi turned provider to pick out Ivan Rakitic, who found the back of the net with an impressive half-volley.

Messi got his second and Barca's sixth goal on the hour mark as the Argentine latched onto a pass from Philippe Coutinho before firing home from close range.

With nine minutes remaining, the hosts bagged a seventh goal as Messi claimed yet another assist, this time picking out Alba, who slotted the ball through the goalkeeper's legs.

Barca were awarded  a penalty in the second minute of time added on when Axel Werner brought down Suarez, who took the penalty and scored for Barca's eighth on the night.
