'Signing Yaya Toure Would Be Irresponsible & Scary'

'Signing Yaya Toure Would Be Irresponsible & Scary'

Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure has come in for more backlash in Brazil after the four-time African Player of the Year seemingly announced his own transfer to one the top clubs in the country.

The Ivorian has been out of contract since January, when he left Chinese side Qingdao Huanghai.

Toure was initially close to joining Botafogo, only to make a last-minute U-turn due to his wife not being interested in living in Rio de Janeiro.

Confusingly, Toure was later seen in a video published by Vasco da Gama presidential candidate Leven Siano, announcing his pending move to the club.

"I want to thank Leven for including me in this project," the 37-year-old said in the video, according to Union Journal.

"I can hardly wait to see all the Vasco fans very soon. It's going to be Vasco."

However, after Leven claimed he would bring the former FC Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder to Vasco if he wins the election, the club's current president has now slammed the news.

"I think it is irresponsible to take a footballer without knowing the financial situation of the club and without having the guarantee of being able to pay it," Vasco president Alexandre Campello told Rio de Janeiro-based radio station Radio Tupi.

"Then put under contract a 37-year-old player, who stopped for a season, it's scary."

The statement comes after Botafogo vice-president Ricardo Rotenberg also slammed the African star, insisting he never deserved to wear the club's jersey.
