Bafana Bafana's Siphiwe Tshabalala famously scored the opening strike of Africa's first-ever World Cup, with images of his superb strike and the team's celebrations going around the world at the time.

Sadly, South Africa's tournament ended after three games, making them the first hosts to be knocked out at the group stage.

Later in the tournament, Ghana became the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals, but their tournament ended in heartbreak after Luis Suarez famously denied them a 120th minute winner with a goalline clearance with his hand, with the Black Stars then going on to lose the subsequent penalty shoutout.

Ahead of the final, former South Africa president Nelson Mandela had everyone at the arena on their feet when he made his final public appearance at a packed Soccer City stadium – you can relive more of the truly great memories from the World Cup on home soil in the gallery above!
