The Super Eagles will miss their first FIFA World Cup since the 2010 edition after drawing with Ghana 1-1 at the Abuja National Stadium this week.
Thomas Partey opened the scoring for the Black Stars to give them the lead 10 minutes into the match, before Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong slotted a goal from the penalty spot to level the game 12 minutes later.
The three-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, however, failed to use this as a catalyst for a much-needed second goal, and after being held to a 0-0 draw in Kumasi last Friday, Ghana qualified for the global showpiece via the away goals rule.
As a result, some of the 60 000 supporters present made their displeasure at the country's performance known by forcefully entering the pitch.
Chaos ensued after the final whistle as Super Eagles fans invaded the pitch, tearing down dugouts and clashing with police, according to Goal.
Ghana players were also forced to run for cover, having begun to celebrate their qualification for the Qatar World Cup with only a pocket of visiting fans.
Authorities later deployed tear gas at the stadium to subdue the melee.
Otto Addo's Ghana will now be appearing at a World Cup for the fourth time. Since their 2006 debut, no African team has been to more World Cup finals tournaments.
