Mbappe Breaks Pele's World Cup Record

Mbappe Breaks Pele's World Cup Record

In-form forward Kylian Mbappe has made FIFA World Cup history after he broke a certain all-time record held by Brazilian icon Pele.

The Paris Saint-Germain No. 7 netted twice as Les Bleus secured a quarter-final spot with their 3-1 victory over Poland on Sunday evening.

Mbappe has now amassed an impressive nine goals in the World Cup overall, after scoring four times in his tournament debut four years ago in Russia and hitting the back of the net on five occasions so far in Qatar.

With his first strike on Sunday, the former Monaco player surpassed Pele to become the youngest footballer in history to net eight World Cup goals before the age of 24 years old.

Mbappe also registered an assist in Les Bleus' victory over the Poles, meaning he has contributed to an incredible 12 goals in 11 World Cup matches.

The superstar currently leads the scoring ranking in Qatar, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Marcus Rashford and Olivier Giroud among those to have found the back of the net three times so far.

Speaking after the game, France manager Didier Deschamps praised the 23-year-old for performing when the world champions needed him most.

"He (Mbappe) speaks on the football pitch," he said, according to RTE.

"He knows that himself but he can change a match in just a moment. He is always playing with such joy. France needed a great Kylian Mbappe tonight and they got one."

Les Bleus will take on England in the last eight after the Three Lions defeated Senegal 3-0 late on Sunday night.
