Following Egypt's elimination from 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification, head coach Carlos Queiroz stepped down from his position.
Mbappe Breaks Record Against Bafana
Despite being ahead 1-0 going into the second leg of their play-off match with Senegal, the lead was quickly eroded when Hamdi Fathi redirected the ball into his own net in the fourth minute to level the tie.
Both teams failed to score the decisive goal needed to guarantee their tickets to Qatar in the 116 minutes that followed.
A penalty shootout would decide the outcome of the match, with Egypt's Mohamed Salah, Ahmed "Zizo" Sayed, and Mostafa Mohamed all missing their spot-kicks to hand the Lions of Teranga successive World Cup qualifications.
As a result of the North Africans' failure to qualify, Mozambique-born manager Queiroz's contract with the record Africa Cup of Nations winners has been terminated according to a clause in his deal with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), as per KingFut.
The Portuguese coach put to bed any rumours suggesting otherwise when he confirmed that he and the EFA will be parting ways.
"It's time for me to leave the leadership of Egypt to someone else," Queiroz said in a post-match press conference, as per KingFut.
"Today my dream was to get Egypt for the fifth time to me to the World Cup, but it was [Senegal manager Aliou] Cisse who qualified with Senegal."
The 69-year-old also took to Twitter to express a heartfelt farewell to the country's supporters.
"Dream is over. We try our best but today was not enough," Queiroz wrote.
"From the bottom of my heart my gratitude to Egypt Federation for this honour of coaching the National Team.
"To all my players and my staff, my recognition and humble thank you so much. You will be always in my heart. It was my privilege to work and be helped by such dedicated and capable professionals and wonderful friends.
"Without you, nothing could be possible for me in my life. I am very much proud of you Lads. My best wishes and enormous gratitude to all Egyptian fans."
