African FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap

Ghana 1-0 Ethiopia

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori was in goal for Ghana, who got their Group G campaign off to a winning start with a narrow 1-0 win over Ethiopia at Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

Mubarak Wakaso broke the deadlock for the Black Stars ten minutes before the half-time break and that was enough to secure the maximum points.

Charles Akonnor's charges are now two points clear of Bafana Bafana in the group ahead of their meeting on Monday evening at FNB Stadium.

Cameroon 2-0 Malawi

Cameroon enjoyed a winning start in Group D with a comfortable 2-0 win over Malawi at Stade Paul Biya.

Vincent Aboubakar gave the Indomitable Lions an early lead in the ninth minute and Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui doubled their lead in the 23rd minute and that was enough to secure maximum points.

Mozambique 0-0 Côte d'Ivoire

Côte d'Ivoire were held to a goalless draw by Mozambique at Stade Olympique in their Group D opener.

Ivory Coast would have been disappointed with a draw, as they are in a group that also has West African giants Cameroon, who got their campaign off to a winning start.

Nigeria 2-0 Liberia

Nigeria started their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Liberia at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho netted twice in the first stanza for the Super Eagles, first midway through the first stanza and again on the stroke of half-time.

Tunisia 3-0 Equatorial Guinea

Tunisia opened their Group B campaign on a winning note after thrashing Equatorial Guinea 3-0 at Nii Ayi Laryea D.

Equatorial Guinea were resistant in the first stanza but Dylan Bronn eventually broke the deadlock for the Carthage Eagles nine minutes after the half-time break.

Ellyes Skhiri and Wahbi Khazri netted two late goals to secure the three points for the hosts.

Mauritania 1-2 Zambia

Zambia enjoyed a winning start in Group B after edging Mauritania 2-1 at Stade Olympique de Nouakchott.

Brighton and Hove Albion striker Enock Mwepu gave Chipolopolo an early lead in the tenth minute and Prince Mumba gave them breathing space with the second goal just before the hour-mark.

Niass Amadou pulled a goal back for Mauritania 21 minutes before time but the visitors held on to maximum points.
