2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap - Europe

Portugal advanced to the next round of the World Cup play-offs after defeating Turkey 3-1 on Thursday night.

Manchester United trio Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot were handed starts, while the in-form Joao Felix started on the bench.

Selecao got off to the perfect start as Otavio opened the scoring with his first-ever senior goal after 15 minutes.

Diogo Jota, who started ahead of Joao Felix, doubled Portugal's three minutes before the halftime break after being set up by Otavio.

The Turks did pull a goal back through Burak Yilmaz, but they squandered a chance to grab an equalising goal after the striker missed an 85th minute penalty.

However, Matheues Nunes ensured Portugal's route to the next round after scoring his side's third goal in the 94th minute.

Wales kept their World Cup dream alive with a 2-1 win over Austria at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Welsh got the breakthrough after 25 minutes courtesy of a superb free-kick from Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

Bale was not done there as he doubled the hosts' advantage six minutes after the halftime break.

Marcel Sabitzer did reduce the deficit for the visitors in the 64th minute, but Wales held on to advance to the final round of the play-offs.

European champions Italy will not be competing at the World Cup after suffering a shock 1-0 loss to North Macedonia.

The was seemingly headed for extra-time until Aleksandar Trajkovski struck the winner for the visitors in the 92nd minute.

North Macedonia will now meet Portugal in the final round of the play-offs.

Sweden advanced to the final round of the play-offs after defeating Czech Republic 1-0 in extra-time.

The sides could not be separated during regulation time, but the Swedes got the all-important winner in the 110th minute through Robin Quaison.

Sweden will now face Poland, who were given a bye after Russia were banned from competing at the World Cup.
