2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap

2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Wrap

Hungary 0-4 England

England maintained their perfect record in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers after thrashing Hungary 4-0 in a Group I clash on Thursday evening.

Captain Harry Kane started on the back of protracted transfer talk, but it was Raheem Sterling that got the ball rolling after a goalless first half before the self-same Kane added to the tally.

Manchester United's Harry Maguire and West Ham United's Declan Rice put the final nail in the home side's coffin.

Italy 1-1 Bulgaria

Italy's first match as the European champions ended in a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria in a Group C World Cup qualifier in Florence.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa had the Azzurri up and running in the first few minutes of the first half, but Atanas Iliev ruled out any hopes of a victory with the leveller a little thereafter on.

Liechtenstein 0-2 Germany

Hansi Flick began his reign as the manager of Germany with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein in an away clash in Group J.

The former Bayern Munich coach replaced Joachim Loew following the conclusion of the UEFA Euro 2020, and goals from Timo Werner and Leroy Sane saw him off to the perfect start.

Estonia 2-5 Belgium

A brace from Chelsea's record-signing Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Estonia in a Group E qualifier.

Estonia raced into a second minute lead from Mattias Kait, but Hans Vanaken drew Belgium level before Lukaku doubled their lead heading into the interval.

Lukaku bagged a double after the restart and left Axel Witsel as well as Thomas Foket to compound Estonia's evening, whilst substitute Erik Sorga provided the home side's second goal.

Sweden 2-1 Spain

Spain encountered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sweden following a Group B qualifier at the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Carlos Soler provided La Roja the lead within the first five minutes, but Spanish-based Alexander Isak had the Swedes level before Viktor Claesson came up with the winner in the second period.

Poland 4-1 Albania

Poland returned to action in buoyant mood following a disappointing Euro 2020 and thumped Albania 4-1 at home.

The Poles moved into second spot in Group I on the back of the win, which came thanks to Robert Lewandowski, Adam Buksa, Grzegorz Krychowiak and Karol Linetty.

Albania's response came from forward Sokol Cikalleshi, as San Marino awaits the Polish next and Hungary meeting up Albania.
