2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Brazil Scrape Past Venezuela, Uruguay Run Riot At Colombua

2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: Brazil Scrape Past Venezuela, Uruguay Run Riot At Colombua

Brazil maintained top spot in the South American World Cup qualifying table after overcoming Venezuela with a third win in three matches.

The five-time World Cup winners were without talisman Neymar, who returned to Paris Saint Germain after picking up an injury.

Gabriel Jesus started alongside Roberto Firmino and Richarlison in the attack while Ederson got the nod ahead of Alisson Becker between the sticks.

The first half failed to provide a lot of golden opportunities, with Richarlison going closest by forcing Wuilker Faríñez into a save on 41 minutes while Douglas Luiz had a goal disallowed soon after.

The deadlock was eventually broken on 69 minutes when Osorio's poor defensive header allowed Firmino to slip in and volley past Wuilker Faríñez.

Venuezela showed no real attacking threat thereafter, despite looking to claim their first point of the qualifying campaign.

In the end, Selecao were unable to add to their tally in the closing stages as one goal was enough to secure top spot in the qualifying, making it three wins from three matches.

Colombia 0-3 Uruguay

Uruguay got their second win in the qualifiers after thrashing Colombia 3-0 at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez.

Manchester United's Edinson Cavani got the scoring the underway for the visitors as early as the fifth minute with his second goal in as many matches.

Luis Suarez carried his club onto the international stage after doubling Uruguay's lead from the penalty spot in the 54th minute, before Darwin Nunez sealed the win on 73 minutes.
